It sold the things nobody needed but everybody wanted to try in the mall. Then it sold mostly one thing.

Why ghost: The stores were liquidated in 2008 and the company renamed itself TSIC, Inc., but the name was sold. It changed hands twice more, for $65.7M in 2011 and $100M in 2016, and sharperimage.com was still selling gadgets in October 2026.11131415

Sharper Image began in 1977 with a runner’s watch advertised in a magazine, mailed its first catalog in 1979 and opened stores in 1981. By fiscal 2004 it had 175 stores and $760M of revenue, and 40% of that came from its own fanless Ionic Breeze air purifiers. Consumer Reports said the purifiers did little; the company sued and lost. Air-purifier sales collapsed, revenue fell by almost a third in two years, a shareholder forced the founder out in 2006, and in February 2008 the company filed for Chapter 11. The stores were liquidated; the name lived on as a licence. This page is built from its SEC filings, court coverage in the Los Angeles Times, and the filings of the companies that bought the brand.

Key findings

  1. One product carried the company. Air purifiers were 40.0% of revenue in fiscal 2004, 27.7% in 2005 and 23.4% in 2006, and the company warned that their sales would keep falling.1
  2. Most of the lost revenue was purifiers. From fiscal 2004 to 2006 revenue fell by about $235M. By our calculation from the company’s percentages, about $181M of that was the air-purification line.1 (derived)
  3. It sued its critic, and lost. A federal judge dismissed its suit against Consumer Reports in November 2004, finding no reasonable probability that the reviews were false. The company later paid $525,000 of Consumers Union’s costs.45
  4. The founder went, the slide did not stop. Richard Thalheimer left as chairman and chief executive on September 25, 2006. Sales fell another 26% the next year, and the company filed for Chapter 11 in February 2008.267

Gadgets you could try in the mall

The company was founded in 1977, mailed its first catalog in 1979, opened its first stores in 1981 and went online in 1994.1 Its founder, Richard Thalheimer, broke into the market with a waterproof runner’s watch advertised in a magazine, and took the company public in 1987.3

The formula was a monthly catalog and a chain of mall stores full of massage chairs, nose-hair trimmers and gadgets that customers could pick up and play with.3

The Ionic Breeze years

Its leading proprietary product was the Ionic Breeze Quadra, a fanless electrostatic air purifier.16 From fiscal 2002 to 2004 revenue rose from $513.8M to $760.0M, net earnings peaked at $21.0M in fiscal 2003, and the store count grew from 127 to 175.1 Comparable-store sales rose 13.6% and then 15.3%.1

In fiscal 2004 the air-purification line produced 40.0% of the company’s revenue.1 The company said a single supplier in Asia made its air purifiers and a number of other products.1

2002 – 2005 · The review

Suing Consumer Reports

Consumer Reports criticised the Ionic Breeze in its February 2002 and October 2003 issues. Sharper Image sued Consumers Union, its publisher, claiming the tests were unreliable because they assumed a fan.416

In an order dated November 9, 2004, Judge Maxine Chesney in San Francisco granted Consumers Union’s special motion to strike the complaint under California’s anti-SLAPP law: “Sharper Image has not demonstrated a reasonable probability that any of the challenged statements were false.”416 The company dropped its appeal and paid Consumers Union $525,000 in fees and costs.5 Five class actions followed by April 2006, claiming the purifier did not perform as advertised.1

2005 – 2007 · The slide

Revenue down a third, the founder out

Revenue fell to $669.0M in fiscal 2005 and $525.3M in fiscal 2006, with net losses of $16.1M and $59.9M. Sales per square foot dropped from $618 to $383.1 The air-purifier share fell to 23.4%.1

In May 2006 an investor group, Knightspoint, which owned 12.8% of the shares, settled a proxy fight in exchange for board seats. On September 25, 2006 Thalheimer departed as chairman and chief executive and director Jerry W. Levin took over on an interim basis.23 The board also announced a review of its stock-option grants and restated three years of results.3

2008 · The end

Chapter 11, a stalking horse and a new name

Sales for the year to January 31, 2008 fell 26% to $374.9M.6 On February 19, 2008 the company filed for Chapter 11 in Delaware with 184 stores.78 Nasdaq told the company on February 20 that its shares would be delisted, and suspended them on February 29.917

In May a joint venture of Gordon Brothers and Hilco agreed to buy the trade name, the catalog and website business and the right to liquidate the stores for $51.25M in cash, subject to an auction.10 The sale closed on June 5 at a base price of $49M; the going-out-of-business sales had begun on May 31.11 To satisfy the purchase agreement, the company renamed itself TSIC, Inc. on July 17, 2008.12

A name worth more than the stores

Iconix Brand Group bought the Sharper Image trademark and related rights in October 2011 for $65.65M in cash.13 In December 2016 it sold them for $100M to ThreeSixty Group, which it described as the brand’s largest licensee.14

In October 2026 sharperimage.com was trading as an online gadget shop.15

The air-purification line was 40.0% of revenue in fiscal 2004 and 23.4% two years later. By our calculation about $181M of the $235M fall in revenue over those two years came from that one line.1 (derived)

Consumer Reports panned the Ionic Breeze in 2002 and 2003. The company’s suit was struck in November 2004, it paid $525,000 of the publisher’s costs, and five class actions over the purifier’s performance followed.14516

Massage chairs, its other big line, fell from 9.1% to 6.3% of revenue. Average store transactions fell from $151 to $98 and sales per square foot from $618 to $383 between fiscal 2004 and 2006.1 An analyst told the Los Angeles Times the company had nothing new “that people overwhelmingly feel like they really need to own.”3

A shareholder fight in 2006, the founder’s exit in September, an interim chief executive and a stock-option review that restated three years of results all came as sales were falling.23 Sales fell another 26% in the next fiscal year.6

Sharper Image sued Consumers Union over two reviews, lost, and paid $525,000 of its costs.45

What if speculative

Without the lawsuit the reviews would still have existed, but there would have been no court finding against the company to report. It might have redesigned or repositioned the product instead of defending it.

What happened

Air purifiers and massage chairs were nearly half of revenue in fiscal 2004; the company itself listed its dependence on them as a risk.1

What if speculative

Using the boom years’ profits, $21.0M in fiscal 2003 alone, to build more proprietary lines might have cushioned the fall. Whether any gadget could have matched the Ionic Breeze is unknowable.1

Data notes

Derived: Air-purifier revenue is the disclosed share times total revenue: 40.0% × $760.0M ≈ $304M (fiscal 2004); 27.7% × $669.0M ≈ $185M (2005); 23.4% × $525.3M ≈ $123M (2006). The fall of about $181M compares with a total revenue fall of $234.8M. Because the shares are rounded, these are approximations.1

Restated: The fiscal 2006 annual report restated earlier years after a stock-option review. The Los Angeles Times, before the restatement, gave a fiscal 2005 net loss of $15.6M; we use the restated $16.1M.13

Two measures: The fiscal 2007 figure ($374.9M) is “total company sales” from a press release; the company’s annual reports use revenue, which is slightly higher ($525.3M against $506.7M of sales for fiscal 2006).16 The company filed no annual report for fiscal 2007.

Conflicts: The court’s order is dated November 9, 2004; the Los Angeles Times reported the ruling as Wednesday, November 10.416 The Times’s infobox gives 1972 as the founding year; the company’s own filings say 1977, which we use.13

Unknown: The date the last store closed, what creditors recovered, and who owns the name in 2026. Press reports describe a separate licence for the catalog and website held by another company after 2009; we could not confirm it from a primary source and leave it out.
